Badhuram Chaudhary of Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City–4, Uttar Behadi, has been earning around NRs 70,000 per month through the commercial production and sale of bamboo-based items. For a long time, he has been using his craftsmanship to make various products from bamboo and selling them in the local market.

Chaudhary produces a variety of household items in his workshop, with all his family members supporting the operation. He shared that the income generated from selling bamboo products has been sustaining his family—covering the upbringing and education of his children as well as all household expenses.

“There are five members in my family—my wife, children and I. After sending the children to school in the morning, my wife and I dedicate our time to this work. This business is our primary source of income; we have no other means to run the household,” he said. “This business not only covers all our expenses but also allows us to save a little.”

He recalled that when he first started the business, his financial condition was very weak. The family struggled to meet daily needs, but now the same business has enabled them to comfortably manage all expenses and even save some money.

Although bamboo products initially struggled to find a market, demand has gradually increased. “Now that the products are gaining market recognition, sales have increased significantly,” he said. “We are currently unable to keep up with customer demand.”

Chaudhary produces and sells items such as hangers, flower vases, stools, swings, and bangle holders. According to him, hangers cost NRs 1,600, flower vases NRs 450, chairs NRs 3,000, stools NRs 350 to 400, and swings are sold for NRs 2,500.

Stating that his monthly turnover is around NRs 70,000, Chaudhary said he makes a profit of about 40 percent. He added that his motivation behind choosing this business was the belief that one should earn a livelihood in their own community rather than going abroad, even if the income is modest.
