Rupandehi – A group of young entrepreneurs in Tilottama, Rupandehi, have launched the production of organic fertilizer as a sustainable alternative to chemical-based products. Around 20 youths have registered Nepal Bio Compost Pvt. Ltd. and begun producing fertilizer with a focus on improving human health and restoring soil fertility.
Marketed under the brand name ‘Jaiko’, the fertilizer is packaged in attractive one-kilogram bags for easy use. According to the producers, it is suitable for both large-scale farms and home gardening, including potted plants and flowers.
The fertilizer is made by naturally decomposing cow and buffalo dung, forest weeds rich in medicinal properties, and various crop residues. With the rising health and environmental concerns linked to chemical fertilizers, the company aims to offer a safer, eco-friendly alternative.
“So far, we’ve invested around NPR 30 million. We’re hopeful that we’ll start seeing returns soon,” said Rahul Panthi, a company representative.
Panthi emphasized that excessive use of chemical fertilizers is degrading soil quality and harming the broader ecosystem. “Many people knowingly use chemical fertilizers despite their adverse effects. It’s damaging not just the soil and human health, but also the environment and biodiversity,” he added.
Despite the growing interest in organic farming, Panthi acknowledged the challenge of promoting organic fertilizers in a market that favors quick results from chemical products.
What is ‘Jaiko’ Fertilizer?
‘Jaiko’ is a 100% organic fertilizer made through natural decomposition processes, according to company treasurer Surendra Kumar Gautam, who adds that it promotes healthy plant growth and boosts productivity.
“It contains essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), as well as micronutrients necessary for plant development,” Gautam said.
Company vice-chairman and soil expert Lokendra Gharti Magar described Jaiko as an odorless, pesticide-free, and environmentally friendly fertilizer. It is recommended in the following amounts:
- 200 grams per flowering plant
- 1 kilogram per fruit-bearing plant
- 200 grams per vegetable plant
He noted that the nutrients in Jaiko are water-soluble, making them easily absorbable by plants. The fertilizer also contains beneficial microbes, vitamins, and hormones that enhance soil biology and plant resilience.
“Since it’s made from medicinal leaves and organic waste, it contributes to a cleaner environment. It also boosts plant immunity, increases yield, improves soil quality, and prevents degradation,” Magar added.
Growing production, rising demand
Currently, the company produces around 1.5 tons of fertilizer daily, according to member Shanti Magar. However, meeting market demand remains a challenge during peak farming seasons due to the company’s early-stage operations.
“Demand is especially high during the planting season, and we’re still working to match supply with demand,” said Chairman Yam Bahadur Thapa.
Jaiko fertilizer is currently being distributed across Rupandehi, Palpa, Kapilvastu, Gulmi, Nawalparasi, and Syangja districts.
