Suresh Bishwakarma, a resident of Boradandi, Dhangadhi Sub-Metropolitan City-3, has been saving Rs 40,000 per month from his nursery business. Defying the common belief that one must go abroad to earn a living, he operates ‘Kantipur Nursery’ and engages in commercial plant production.
Previously residing in Buddha Chowk, Dhangadhi-8, Bishwakarma gained extensive experience in plant-related work while employed at Bioplantic Private Limited Company in Kathmandu. After years of learning, he decided to return to his village and establish his own nursery business.
He runs his nursery on four kathas of rented land, for which he pays an annual rent of Rs 150,000. Having been in the nursery business for 13 years, he has invested Rs five million in his venture in Boradandi, Dhangadhi, over the past five years.
Bishwakarma reports monthly savings of Rs 40,000, which fully supports his family of six, including his children’s education. Additionally, he has created employment opportunities for three individuals, each earning a monthly salary of Rs 36,000.
“This business carries significant risks. Adverse environmental conditions can lead to infections, causing plants to rot and deteriorate, resulting in financial losses,” he explained. “There are ups and downs in business, but perseverance and hard work are key. This venture has provided me with financial stability, and I have never had to seek financial assistance from anyone.”
Bishwakarma sources and sells various plant varieties, including fruit-bearing trees and ornamental plants (show-plants), from different regions such as Jhapa, Biratnagar, Itahari, and Kanchanpur. Additionally, he cultivates some plants in his own nursery.
