Pema Chhiring Sherpa has been running a hotel in the Khambachen region, located at an altitude of 4,145 meters above sea level, for over a decade. With the rise of tourism in the Kanchenjunga region, Pema left his ancestral profession of yak herding and started operating a guest house in Khambachen.

In the past, we used to plant barley here, Gante (Bhotey) radish, and potatoes,” he says. “Whatever we produced would be taken through Sekathum to the Taplejung market and exchanged for grains.

Raising yaks, selling them in Tibet after rearing, and selling dairy products made from yak milk used to be the main occupation.
However, Pema says that in recent times, hotels have started operating in Khambachen.
