Rajendra Tamang, the Ward Chair of Ward No. 1 in Shyamshila, Pauwadungma Rural Municipality, is actively engaged in commercial dairy farming alongside his public service responsibilities. Balancing his role as a local representative, he has also committed himself to productive agricultural work.
Tamang currently operates a dairy farm with four improved-breed cows. By adopting modern farming techniques and maintaining proper management practices, he has been working to increase productivity.
He sells the milk produced daily in the local market and has been able to generate a steady income. According to him, after deducting all expenses, he earns between NPR 25,000 and 30,000 per month from milk sales. He emphasizes that effective time management allows individuals to fulfill public duties while also engaging in income-generating activities.
“If time is managed properly, one can succeed in productive sectors alongside government responsibilities,” Tamang said. “My message to the youth is that instead of going abroad for employment, they should try to do something meaningful in their own village.”
Income from dairy farming has helped support his family expenses and motivated him to make further investments. Despite rising costs of feed, medicine, and farm management, he believes that proper planning and hard work can yield good returns.
Tamang’s initiative has also encouraged local farmers to take up commercial livestock farming. Many locals visit his farm to learn about dairy practices and are inspired to start similar ventures in their own community. Currently, 39 farmers in Shyamshila are raising improved-breed cows, strengthening the potential for local employment and income generation.
Pauwadungma Rural Municipality has been prioritizing agriculture and livestock through various programs, and the active involvement of an elected representative in this sector is seen as a positive sign. Stakeholders believe that effective use of subsidies, training, and technical support provided by local authorities can significantly improve farmers’ livelihoods.
Tamang shared that he plans to expand his farm by increasing the number of cows in the future. He is also considering diversifying into dairy products. Emphasizing self-reliance through hard work at home, he urges young people to pursue opportunities in agriculture and livestock farming.
Additionally, aiming to utilize organic manure produced by the farm, he has expanded kiwi cultivation over approximately 300 ropani of land. His family members have been actively supporting him in these endeavors.
