As soon as visitors reach the Darai Community Homestay in Dumsi, Vyas Municipality–10, they are greeted by tall, striking maize plants. Anyone arriving here is amazed by the sight of the towering stalks.
Asha Darai, the operator of the community homestay, says, “Guests are busy taking photos and making TikTok videos with these tall maize plants. In previous years, even though the cobs were large, there used to be only one per plant. This year, we have an abundant harvest, and the cobs are exceptionally big.” This season, nearly every household in Dumsi has produced large, impressive maize ears.
In the past, farmers struggled with pest infestation during planting and weeding season, along with shortages of fertilizer. According to Crop Development Officer Kiran Pariyar from the Agriculture Development Office, the absence of such problems this year has led to a significant increase in maize production across the district.
In fiscal year 2079/80, maize cultivated on 22,238 hectares yielded 67,015 metric tons. In 2080/81, 22,348 hectares produced 67,200 metric tons, with productivity at 3.01 tons per hectare. In the current fiscal year 2081/82, maize grown on 22,195 hectares has yielded 73,246 metric tons.
“Tanahun is known not only for rice but also as a key maize-producing region. Rishing Rural Municipality has long been a pocket area for maize seed production,” Pariyar added. Tanahun is suitable for crops such as rice, maize, millet, wheat, soybeans, and ginger, and is also a major pocket area for orange production.
