Mahendranagar (Dhanusha), Asar 3 – The Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, Dr. Bishwanath Paudel, has issued a strong warning that any bank found cheating its customers will face immediate action.
Speaking at a discussion organized by the Janakpur office of Nepal Rastra Bank with representatives from the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and various banks and financial institutions, Governor Paudel stated that his primary focus is on protecting public assets and ensuring broader access to financial resources.
He stressed that any bank found defrauding or causing undue trouble to customers under various pretexts will be dealt with strictly and without exception. His statement follows complaints from local businesspeople in Dhanusha, who alleged that banks have, in the past, auctioned off collateral from borrowers by creating unnecessarily difficult conditions.
During the discussion, business representatives expressed concern that banks often neglect small entrepreneurs and farmers seeking loans. In response, bank representatives pointed out that loan defaults are relatively high in Madhesh Province.
Governor Paudel also highlighted that reducing the economic gap between the rich and the poor is his top priority. “Monetary policy should align under fiscal policy. The economy must be driven by strengthening supervisory capacity,” he said. “That’s why I emphasize fewer rules but stronger oversight.”
He further remarked that bank financing should not be limited to a few wealthy individuals but should reach small entrepreneurs and the general public through accessible lending.
Executive Directors Guru Prasad Paudel of the Bank and Financial Institution Regulation Department and Dirgha Bahadur Rawal of the Supervision Department both assured that suggestions from the discussion would be prioritized in policy-making and that such consultations are valuable.
Entrepreneurs attending the program also shared the challenges they face in operating their businesses, accessing finance, and obtaining loans.
